A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's key government projects.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the prior year. This project was closely associated with his government's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a significant growth of its duties in national works. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised ongoing concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party urged an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This pause was suggested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for swift accountability."
In response, the president maintained that the train had been operating in total accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital undertakings.
