Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People using these medications should be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a reversion to original weight in about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting usually see a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Experts believe the way of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced something that goes on and you become ravenous," described a patient.
This challenge is worsened if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Use
Figures show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Use is greater among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians caution that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural support.
