Senate Approves Bill to Disclose Jeffrey Epstein Files

The upper chamber of Congress on this Tuesday gave swift approval to legislation that will force the release of official records related to the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, following a overwhelming vote in the lower house and a shift by the president and his Republican allies. The administration gave in after months of trying to forestall the cross-party initiative involving a case that has plagued the president since his comeback to the White House.

Unanimous Passage in Congress

The Senate acted by general agreement, which requires approval from each senator but avoids a recorded vote, expediting the process. Hours earlier, the House overwhelmingly approved the bill on a near-unanimous vote.

Citizens have endured sufficient delay. The survivors have waited long enough,” the top Senate Democrat stated in a address to the chamber on Tuesday, before urging the chamber to adopt it by consent. “Reveal the truth. Ensure full disclosure.”

Future Action

The measure next goes to Donald Trump for his endorsement. Trump stated on the previous day that he would sign the measure.

Even though Trump has for months downplayed the controversy over the official management of the investigation as a “false narrative”, he expressed his backing for the House bill over the past few days, and stated he would give his assent if it reaches his desk.

Reaction

Democrats, along with those affected and their advocates who were watching from a House gallery, broke into applause after the bill was enacted. The sole “no” vote came from a GOP representative, who said he feared the measure would reveal specific data of people, persons of interest and others implicated in the investigation.
